FINE ART
Giles combines his interest in landscape forms, cityscapes, ruins, and travels, then translates them into his paintings, drawings, and photo-montages. Pastels, acrylics, oils, or gouache are his choice of materials for the paintings ranging in size from 4”x 6” to 30” x 40”. Graphite, charcoal, and pastel on various paper boards, sometimes with added collage elements, are the materials for his drawings.
Maze-like paths, strewn with fossils of plant or animal life convey a sense of the natural world, but also of the surreal in Giles’s paintings and drawings. The depth achieved invites the viewer to explore the paths and make their own discoveries.
These montages depict man-made places - urban landscapes such as abandoned buildings or deserted cities. There are also interior views with figures and their belongings which suggest stories. Found images are carefully selected from old books, magazines and his collection of photographs.
